Melbourne is regarded as the cultural and fashion capital of Australia and is the shoreline capital of the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. The entire Greater Melbourne area covers 9992.5 km2 and has a population of around 4.5 million. The City of Melbourne municipality covers 37.7 km2 and has a residential population of over 148,000 (as of 2016). In the Southbank and Melbourne Arts Precinct is the site of Arts Center Melbourne – a performing expressions complex – and the National Gallery of Victoria, with Australian and indigenous craftsmanship. The Hoddle Grid in the City Center is home to Melbourne's famous Arcades and Laneways, back streets, Eureka Tower and is prestigious for its unmistakable mix of contemporary and Victorian design and in addition far reaching parks and gardens which encompass its edges. The City Center is home to five of the six tallest structures in Australia. Melbourne Cricket Ground is with a capacity of 100,000 and is considered one of the world's greatest stadiums, hosting the Commonwealth Games, birthplace of Test Cricket, and the home of Australian Rules Football, tennis tournament.
